What is Civil Air Patrol? Civil Air Patrol is the volunteer auxiliary of the US Air Force established in 1941, just days before World War II. Volunteers are ages 12 and up. Students who join before their 18th birthday have the opportunity to fly five free powered flights and five free glider flights, as well as the opportunity to earn their private pilot’s license at a fraction of the price with a Civil Air Patrol Instructor Pilot, as part of the Aviation Initiative for Cadets offered through the Cadet Programs. Cadets learn Aerospace Education, Leadership, Character Development, Physical Fitness, and Emergency Services Training. Adult members who are pilots can earn extra flight hours through flying with Civil Air Patrol Emergency Services missions. All adults must pass a FBI background check and may volunteer to work as mentors in Cadet Programs as instructors in Aerospace Education, Emergency Services, Leadership, Character Development, or the Physical Fitness Program. Adults may also earn qualifications to work as Ground Team Leader, Mission Observer, Mission Scanner, and other Mission Base roles through Civil Air Patrol and FEMA training.
